Spring in the Connecticut River Valley
The weather was warmer
all of a sudden.
The air wet,
like one of those indoor reptile exhibits at the zoo
or Hong Kong my friend says.
The bees start tapping on the window
ants reappear
the worms flushed from the soil
by the April rain already.
Spiders dangle in the wind on the balcony
a thunderstorm warning comes in
while the sky is blue
and you can’t see the pollen
but you feel it
in the back of your throat,
all the while school is ending,
and the cars keep humming
right through the Connecticut River Valley.
I like seeing the tops of trees here.
In the distance I can almost see the rain coming
everything green and yellow before then,
half-used tissues everywhere
empty chasers and printed essays.
School starts ending
all of a sudden.
Nothing much to do about it.
